RESUMEN

The high cost of living and prolonged lockdowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic made the financial well-being of individuals vulnerable, especially young adults. This paper examines the impact of financial behaviour on financial well-being (FWB) among young Malaysians during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study collected variable data on financial literacy, financial behaviour, financial socialisation, self-control, financial technology and FWB. To collect a representative sample of Malaysian young adults, a multi-stage random sampling method was used, and 360 young adults aged 18-29 years old completed the questionnaires. Structural equation modelling was adopted to investigate the factors influencing young adults' FWB. The empirical findings revealed a significant mediating effect of financial behaviour in the relationships between financial literacy, financial socialisation, self-control, financial technology, and FWB. The research concluded that the mediation analysis yields a clear and firm conclusion that financial behaviour is important in empowering young adults' FWB. Thus, the present study adds value to the existing literature on the relationship between financial behaviour and FWB. Furthermore, the paper's findings will assist government agencies and non-governmental organisations in developing outreach programmes for young adults per the strategies outlined in the Twelfth Malaysia Plan and the aspirations pledged in the Malaysian Youth Policy 2015-2035.

RESUMEN

The paper evaluates the effect of contingent convertible capital (cocos) on bank profitability between 2015 and 2020 using a dynamic system generalized method of moments (GMM) approach. The empirical findings indicate that (cocos) are positive and statistically significant, implying that more contingent convertible capital improves bank profitability. Additionally, bank profitability increases when the bank's net stable funding ratio (NSFR) increases and the interaction between liquidity (NSFR) and capital (COCOs) has a negative influence on bank profitability during the covid-19 pandemic. These findings hold true when an alternative proxy is used. This study provides insight into the role of contingent convertible capital in bank profitability for policymakers. RESUMEN

Radix Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen) is a Chinese herbal used in China to treat irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, insomnia, swelling liver, and angina pectoris. It also has various pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, anti-tumor, anti-atherogenesis, and anti-diabetes. However, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), e.g., Danshen, lacks quality control. Pesticide residues and heavy metals are the most important problems, although Danshen may cure many diseases, even SARS-CoV-2 in a COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the present short commentary discusses the background of Danshen, quality management, and its application to COVID-19.

RESUMEN

Background: The pathophysiology of vertically acquired hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) in a pediatric population is well described, however less is known about the psychosocial impact of a child diagnosis and/or living with viral hepatitis. This qualitative study aimed to explore family's experience of living with viral hepatitis to inform supportive models of pediatric centred health care. Method(s): Eligible children, adolescents and their parent/s attending an outpatient pediatric specialist liver clinic in a tertiary hospital in New South Wales, Australia were invited to attend an in-depth interview. Interviews were undertaken face to face in February 2020-March 2020 and April 2021-June 2021 due to COVID-19 related restrictions. Written consent was obtained from participants and their parents. Basic demographic and participant treatment information were collected using a closed-response face sheet containing 11 questions. In-depth interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and checked. Broad theme categories were examined across all participant narratives. Data were thematically analyzed using Braun and Clarke's framework. Result(s): Children recruited were a mean age of 11.2 years (SD 4.9), born in Australia and had vertically acquired HBV or HCV. Four children reported being multilingual and spoke a combination of languages at home. Most children were aware of anti-viral therapies however, at the time of the study no child had commenced. Participant narratives identified four dominant themes three being: Diagnosis, Parent-child disclosure and Secrecy at home. The fourth theme, Living with hepatitis unfolded two distinct subthemes in the way that participants and their parents navigated life. HCV positive children and adolescents had experienced discrimination within and outside the nuclear family, were less informed and their parents expressed concern about treatment and maternal guilt. In contrast, living with HBV was approached with certainty, normality and an expected transition to a parent's adult liver clinic. Conclusion(s): Findings from this study highlight a range of complex psychosocial challenges that children, adolescents and families endure. Additional educational and psychosocial interventions to best support families, particularly those diagnosed with HCV are recommended. The long-term impact and/or emotional burden of these challenges on a child's wellbeing are poorly understood warranting further investigation.

RESUMEN

This study constructs a financial stability index for the Islamic financial system of Indonesia using the dynamic factor model and then links it to economic performance employing a nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model. The financial stability index constructed from a broad range of macrofinancial variables captures well the 2008-2009 global financial crisis and the 2020-2021 COVID 19 pandemic crisis periods. The most significant results suggest that positive and negative shocks in Islamic financial stability in the long run increase and decrease economic performance, respectively. The quantile regression results also demonstrate that Islamic financial stability is statistically significant throughout all quantiles in promoting economic performance, although it plays a greater role at lower quantiles and diminishes when the economic performance is at a high level. Our results highlight that the stability of the Islamic financial system deepening would positively enhance economic performance. © 2021 Asociación Española de Historia Económica.

RESUMEN

Based on the information suggested by World Health Organization (WHO) and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, wearing a mask and sterilizing hands with alcohol-based hand disinfectants are effective ways to maintain good personal hygiene to prevent viral infections. This study focused on the real-time concentrations of alcohol vapor in the air associated with five alcohol-based hand disinfectants. The results indicated that the alcohol concentrations increased dramatically (max. ~46,000 ppb/g sample) in the hand-rubbing process. Hong Kong residents' survey on habits of using such disinfectants showed that 65% of people use them daily and 34% of people use them ≥ 5 times per day, indicating a high frequency of usage. About 79% of respondents claimed to have skin problems, and 18% got eyes discomfort when using these disinfectants. Despite the potential health risks of using alcohol disinfectants remaining unclear, such a large amount and frequent usage should be aware of potential health problems in the long term. © 2022 by the authors.

RESUMEN

Background. Donning personal protective equipment (PPE) and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) are stressful tasks for healthcare professionals, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of simulation training on donning PPE and performing CPR with PPE put on for nurses at a geriatric step-down hospital. Methods. A lecture and simulation training on donning PPE and performing CPR were provided for nurses. Confidence in donning PPE and performing CPR, knowledge of CPR, and satisfaction of participants were assessed before training (baseline), after the lecture, and after the simulation training. Results. 50 nurses (33 women and 17 men) attended both the lecture and simulation training, accounting for 90% of nurses in the department. Self-rated confidence in donning PPE and performing CPR improved significantly after the lecture (both p<0.001) and again after the simulation training (both p<0.001). Knowledge of CPR improved significantly after the lecture (p<0.001). Self-rated satisfaction of participants was high (9.3±0.3). Conclusion. Simulation training on donning PPE and performing CPR with PPE put on significantly improves the knowledge and confidence of nurses in a geriatric step-down hospital. This may contribute to improved patient outcomes, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. © 2022 The Hong Kong Geriatrics Society and Hong Kong Association of Gerontology.
